118: September 2024
I have exciting news! Read on to the end for an announcement about my next big writing project.
September's been good, the kind of productive that feels like healthy growth after the lethargy of late August. The heat broke, and as I type this I can hear wild geese flying south overhead, and I can't stop thinking about Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan emailing each other about bouquets of sharpened pencils in You've Got Mail. Maybe it's the inner academic in me, but September feels like the start of a new year.
What I wrote:
For Seeing & Believing this month, I wrote about Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (pretty fun!), Look Into My Eyes (one of my favorite documentaries of the year), and Megalopolis (hoo boy).
What I talked about:
On the podcasting front, I was delighted to join JR. and Josh over at the Think Christian podcast to talk about Alien: Romulus.
I also guested on the Fear of God podcast to talk about James Cameron's Aliens.
What's next:
That's a lot of Alien franchise talk, or at least, it's more than I've done in such a short period since I published Becoming Alien nearly four years ago. It wasn't all on purpose—the Fear of God podcast happens to be covering the Alien series in the weeks leading up to Halloween—but the timing happens to be great. When I first wrote Becoming Alien, I wrote it as a definitive feminist/theological reading of all six Alien movies, and the book was intended to be complete and final. Now that there's a seventh Alien movie out, the book is neither complete nor final any more. I'm delighted to report that I'm working on a second edition that will include Alien: Romulus. More details to come about the book, about the writing process, and about where and when to pick up the new edition.
